02/28/2009. Remarks by Johan Visschedijk: "From February 1918, the USASC (became USAAS on May 24, 1918) acquired 893 SPAD S.XIII C1s for use by the American Expeditionary Force in Europe. Assigned to the 22nd Aero Squadron, this aircraft was also used for photographic reconnaissance. It is pictured in Europe during the winter of 1918/1919, when it was regularly flown by Jaques Swaab. After the Armistice 435 SPAD S.XIII C1s were shipped to the USA."
