North American NA-146 XAJ-1 Savage

12/31/2008. Remarks by Johan Visschedijk: "The Savage was designed to meet an USN requirement for a high-performance carrier-base bomber with nuclear capabilities. It was powered by two 2,400 hp Pratt & Whitney R-2800-44W radials and a 4,600 lb st Allison J33-A-19 turbojet in the rear fuselage.

Ordered on June 24, 1946, the first of three prototypes flew from Inglewood, California on July 3, 1948, with Bob Chilton at the controls. Later 121460 was used in flight refueling trials, using a hose-and-reel unit in the bomb-bay, while it also performed trials fitted with a Grumman A-6 Intruder nose gear."
