Consolidated 28-4 PBY-4 Catalina

06/23/2025. Remarks by Johan Visschedijk: "On December 18, 1937, the USN ordered 33 PBY-4 Catalina flying boats, these were serialed 1213 to 1245 (c/n 1 to 33). The last five (1241 to 1245) were also used for modifications or experiments.

The 1241 to 1243 were used as a pattern aircraft, having blister gun emplacements installed on the rear hull instead of the sliding hatches as installed on the previous 28.

The above pictured 1241 was also used for trials of another vertical tail and rudder design, subsequently it was assigned to VP-13 Squadron, code 13-P-12. Later 1241 joined 1243 at VP-101 Squadron, 1242 had been assigned to VP-101 Squadron. On December 12, 1941, the three aircraft were destroyed by Japanese fighters at mooring at Olongapo, Cavite, Philippines.

The 1244 was allotted to Project Baker for experiments with instrument landing equipment. On December 9, 1941, it water looped on landing during training at NAS San Diego, California, one of the seven occupants was killed."

See page 14388 for the fifth aircraft (1245).
