Hawker Sea Fury FB.Mk.60

11/30/2009. Remarks by Alfred Damen: "The MLD took delivery of 22 Hawker built Sea Fury Mk.50/60 for use on board the carrier HMS 'Karel Doorman' (former British Light Fleet Carrier HMS 'Venerable'), and the first batch, ten F.Mk.50 (export-version of the F.Mk.X fighter), was delivered between April 12 and May 25, 1948. The second batch, twelve FB.Mk.60 (export-version of the FB.Mk.11 fighter-bomber), were delivered between May 12 and July 20, 1950. In 1951 the surviving Mk.50s were rebuilt by Hawker to Mk.60 standard.

The aircraft were assigned to No.3 Squadron and initially given serials 10-1 to 10-22, but were later re-serialled 6-1 to 6-22. Seven Sea Fury Mk.50/60's were lost to accidents: some of them in the sea from HMS 'Karel Doorman', another pulled out of a dive too late and flew into the flight operations building at Valkenburg NAS, while Sea Fury 6-9 was lost on April 14, 1954 in a mid-air collision with RNethAF F-84G Thunderjet, s/n K-103. The last of the surviving Mk.50/60's was withdrawn from use on January 26, 1957.

Fokker built 25 FB.Mk.51 under license at their Schiphol factory near Amsterdam, these were delivered between July 4, 1951 and February 25, 1952. The aircraft were given serials 6-23 to 6-47 (c/n 6290-6314), and were also used by No.3 Squadron as fighter bombers and later as advanced trainer. Ten Sea Fury FB.Mk.51's have been lost in various accidents: some of them in the sea from HMS 'Karel Doorman', others due to other reasons, while Sea Furies 6-25 and 6-28 were lost over Wales in May 1953 in a mid-air collision. The last of the surviving Mk.51's was withdrawn from use on January 24,1957.

Sea Fury FB.Mk.51, s/n 6-43 went in 1956 to the Aviation Section of the Technical University at Delft, later it was donated to the National Aviation Museum Aviodrome and is still on display."
