de Havilland D.H.98 F-8 Mosquito

08/31/2021. Remarks by Johan Visschedijk: "This aircraft was built by the de Havilland of Canada Ltd at Downsview, Ontario, as a Mosquito B.Mk.VII under the British serial KB315. Under the USAAF serial 43-34926 it was one of three F-8s that were delivered to the 12th Base Headquarters and Air Base Squadron at Peterson Field, Colorado Springs, Colorado, USA on June 2, 1943. It was modified to a photographic reconnaissance aircraft, subsequently it was fitted with American radio equipment at Wright Field, Dayton, Ohio.

Major James F. Setchell, and his navigator Captain Jerome C. Alexander, of the 3rd Photographic Reconnaissance and Mapping Group, delivered 43-34926 to the Mediterranean Theater of Operations, arriving at La Marsa, Tunisia, on October 18, 1943, via Canada, Greenland, Iceland, Scotland, England and French Marocco. At La Marsa the 3rd was assigned to the 12th Air Force. The 3rd, renamed 3rd Photographic Group (Reconnaissance) on November 13, 1943, was transferred to San Severo in Italy on December 7, 1943. Flown by another pilot the aircraft was written off after a crash-landing on August 19, 1944.

Colonel Setchell had named his aircraft The "Spook" after his son (one of the scariest-looking babies he had ever seen!).
