Rumpler 4A B.I

05/15/2022. Remarks by Johan Visschedijk: "Designated Rumpler 4A, Edmund Rumpler's prototype of an unarmed two-seat biplane, intended for reconnaissance and training aircraft, made its first flight in 1914. The German AAS gave it the designation Rumpler B.I. Fitted with an 100 hp Mercedes D.I engine, the B.I was an unequal-span biplane and had a fixed landing gear with a tail skid. The crew of two was seated in tandem in open cockpits.

The Rumpler B.I is easily recognizable by the snub-nosed keel and rudder and the characteristic notch in the upper wing center section. A curious detail was the funnel-shaped streamlined fuel tank under the center section.

The German AAS received 198 examples of the B.I, they were used on the western and eastern fronts in 1914-1915.
