General Airplanes 107 Mailman

02/08/2026. Remarks by Johan Visschedijk: "The 107 Mailman was the seventh design, but only the third design that reached construction at the General Airplanes Corporation of Buffalo, New York, USA. The Mailman was designed by Vice-President and Chief-Engineer A. Francis Arcier and Roscoe Markey, with the goal to produce a fast light utility aircraft for the postal services, hence the name of the aircraft.

This advanced single-seat open aircraft had braced sesqui-wings, a Dural-clad monocoque fuselage, and was powered by a 525 hp Pratt & Whitney Hornet nine-cylinder air-cooled radial engine, with for its day an innovative NACA cowling.

The 107 Mailman was constructed in 1929 and was registered NX459K. However, General Airplanes did not manage selling the type and the sole example was eventually sold to the Curtiss-Wright Corporation as an engine test bed.
