03/31/2008. This type, designed by the Naval Aircraft Factory, Philadelphia Navy Yard, Pennsylvania, could operate on wheels or floats. The prototype of this experimental three-seat torpedo-bomber, designated XTN-1, was powered by two 500 hp Wright P-2 radials. Assigned BuNo. A-7027, it was first flown in late 1926.

Douglas received a contract for three similar aircraft, designated XT2D-1, BuNos. A-7051 to A-7053, and the first flew January 27, 1927. The same year an additional 9 aircraft were ordered as T2D-1, BuNos. A-7587 to A-7595. They incorporated a number of structural changes, and were powered by two 525 hp Wright R-1750 radials. Due to pressure from the USAAC, the role of the aircraft was changed in 1928 to patrol and maritime reconnaissance.

The USN ordered another batch of eighteen T2D-1s in June 1930, BuNos. A-8644 to A-8661, however, these 575 hp Wright R-1820E radial engined aircraft were delivered as P2D-1.
