McKillop: "The T4M was an improved Martin T3M equipped with a
525-hp (391 kW) Pratt & Whitney R-1690-24 nine-cylinder, single row,
air-cooled engine, shorter wings and a revised rudder. It had a crew
of three: pilot, bombardier, and gunner. The Navy signed a contract
with Martin on June 30, 1927 for 102 T4M-1s; the first delivery was on
June 9, 1928 to Torpedo Squadron Two Battle Fleet (VT-2B) serving in
the aircraft carrier USS Saratoga (CV-3). Although this aircraft could
operate with a conventional landing gear or on floats, the majority of
them served in aircraft carriers and land based stations. |
