Remarks by Jack McKillop: "The T4M was an improved Martin T3M equipped with a 525-hp (391 kW) Pratt & Whitney R-1690-24 nine-cylinder, single row, air-cooled engine, shorter wings and a revised rudder. It had a crew of three: pilot, bombardier, and gunner. The Navy signed a contract with Martin on June 30, 1927 for 102 T4M-1s; the first delivery was on June 9, 1928 to Torpedo Squadron Two Battle Fleet (VT-2B) serving in the aircraft carrier USS Saratoga (CV-3). Although this aircraft could operate with a conventional landing gear or on floats, the majority of them served in aircraft carriers and land based stations.

In late 1928, Martin decided to build a new plant in Middle River, Maryland, northeast of Baltimore, and sold the Cleveland, Ohio, facility along with the rights to manufacture all then existing Martin aircraft designs to The Great Lakes Aircraft Company, a subsidiary of the Detroit Aircraft Corporation. Great Lakes manufactured the remaining 18 T4M-1s on the original Navy contract and then received a contract for 50 TG-1s and -2s, a version of the T4M-1. Great Lakes built 18 TG-1s and 32 TG-2s.

The T4M-1 remained the Navy's first-line carrier-based torpedo-bomber until 1932 when the Great Lakes TG-2s and Martin BM-1s and -2s had replaced them and the T4M was relegated to utility, training and support work. By 1938, they were all gone."
