Dan Shumaker: "From Roger Pepperell's book, 'Piper Aircraft': In 1943, the first low wing product from the Piper stable appeared, the PT-1 Primary Trainer c/n 1, registration NX4300. This was also known as the Cub PT and first flew on March 14. It was a fabric covered tandem 2 seater with metal tube fuselage and wooden spar wings with flaps. It also had a retractable main gear landing gear. Power was supplied by an 130 hp Franklin 6AC-298-D3 engine. This was developed for the advanced low-cost trainer contract with the USAAC. The contract was not awarded due to the War ending. This aircraft was still registered in 1996 and is the only known survivor of the miscellaneous war-time prototypes."
