08/31/2012. This was the third 727-23 built for American Airlines, it first flew on December 27, 1962, and was delivered to the airline on February 21, 1963. American Airlines named the type '727 Astrojet', as in the early sixties Astrojet was the type name given to all jet aircraft in their fleet. After a total time of 72,211 flying hours and 55,235 landings, N1972 was withdrawn from use on August 31, 1992.

By May 1994 it was owned by FSBU (First Security Bank of Utah). After a year lease to Group Air Management from June 26, 1995 on, it was leased to Aerovias DAP of Chile and registered CC-CLJ on August 28, 1996, while on May 24, 1997 it was leased to Aerosur Bolivia, registered as CP-2322. Reportedly it was scrapped at Opa-Locka, Florida, USA in March 1999.
