Fábrica Militar de Aviones

Fábrica Militar de Aviones (FMA) was established in 1927, controlled by the Dirección de Aerotecnica. Initially formed to produce foreign designed aircraft, engines and equipment under license like the Avro 504K, from 1932 on aircraft of indigenous design were also build, the first was the Ae.C.1.

In 1943 FMA was redesignated Instituto Aerotécnico and became Industrias Aeronáuticas y Meccánicas del Estado (IAME) in 1952. IAME was formed to take over and control all State activities concerned with the design and construction of aircraft, engines and equipment. On July 1, 1952 the original name of Fábrica Militar de Aviones (FMA) was adopted briefly.

In 1957 the FMA was renamed Dirección Nacional de Fabricaciones e Investigaciones Aeronáuticas (DINFIA), while it reverted once again to its original name of Fábrica Militar de Aviones (FMA) in 1968.

The state company was privatized in 1995 and became a division of Lockheed on July 1, known as Lockheed Martin Aircraft Argentina SA (LMAASA).

From 1927 on, several abbreviation were used in the aircraft designations, like Ae, I.A., I.Aé.
