Mikoyan and Gurevich MiG-3

09/30/2008. Remarks by Johan Visschedijk: "Coded '5-T-7', this aircraft belonged to Torpedo Squadron 5 aboard the aircraft carrier USS Yorktown (CV-5). All aircraft serving in the Yorktown had the vertical and horizontal tail surfaces painted red to identify the carrier. The 'E' marked under the cockpit was awarded to naval personnel for excellence in bombing and gunnery.

Crewed by pilot Harlan T. Johnson, bombardier Charles E. Fosha, and radioman/rear gunner James W. Dalzell, the aircraft was joined by ten TBD-1s and seventeen SBD-3s in an attack on the Jaluit Atoll, Marshall Islands on February 1, 1942. Disoriented over the target in poor weather and too low on fuel to return to the carrier, Johnson ditched the aircraft in the Jaluit Lagoon. The crew became prisonors of war."
