Curtiss 57 Teal A-1

04/30/2014. Remarks by Johan Visschedijk: "In 1929, the Curtiss plant in Garden City built two pusher monoplane amphibians, with cantilever wooden wings and metal hulls. While the layout was conventional for the time, the Teal did not win acceptance and further effort was stopped by the worldwide economic Depression which killed the market for it.

The first aircraft was the pictured Model 57 Teal A-1, which was a three-seater powered with the 165 hp Wright J-6-5 Whirlwind engine and flew in March 1930. The J-6-5 was an inadequate power plant and the A-1 was quickly modified to use the 225 hp J-6-7 and underwent modification to increase its wing area. Unfortunately, the increased weight nullified most of the performance gains.

The second aircraft (c/n G-2), designated Model 57 Teal B-1 and registered 970V) was a four-seater powered with the 225 hp Wright J-6-7."
