This aircraft was produced as a P5M-2 maritime patrol flying boat and was subsequently fitted with the AN/AQA-3 "Jezebel" acoustic search (passive sonar) and "Julie" echo-ranging (active sonar) systems to become a P5M-2S ASW aircraft. A total of 115 P5M-2's with a BuNo. were produced: 135474/135543 137846/137848 140140/140150 141252/141258 146440/146445 147539/147542 147575/147576 (to France under MAP) 147926/147937. Another four received a BuNo., 149832/149835, these were P5M-2G’s transferred from the USCG. Most of the P5M-2's were modernized to P5M-2S. In 1962 the surviving P5M-2’s were redesignated P-5B, the P5M-2S became the SP-5B.
