Auffm-Ordt 1908 Monoplan

02/08/2026. Remarks by Johan Visschedijk: "Born in Baden-Baden, Germany (ca. 7 mls, 11 km from the French border), Clément Auffm-Ordt became an aviation pioneer in France, where he designed his first aircraft in 1908.

The Monoplan was a single-seat, high-wing monoplane powered by a 30 hp R.E.P. seven-cylinder air-cooled engine driving a two-bladed R.E.P. propeller. (R.E.P. stands for Robert Esnault Pelterie.) The entire frame of the Monoplan was made of aluminum tubes, the wing and empennage were covered with fabric. The aircraft was built at the Voisin plant at Billancourt, Paris, and first flew in 1908.

The plane was quite unusual for that time. First of all, the roll control scheme was surprising: the pilot, by turning the control wheel, deflected one of the wing panels downwards, and not the end one, but the root one, thus creating a large gap in the wing console, which led to a decrease in lift in this area and, accordingly, caused the plane to roll."
