Macchi M.41bis

06/23/2025. Remarks by Johan Visschedijk: "Carrying the single-seat biplane fighter flying boat to the apex of its development and owing much to the earlier and abortive M.26, with which it shared a similar equi-span single-bay unstaggered wing configuration and wooden construction with plywood and fabric skinning, the M.41 commenced tests in 1927. Powered by a 420 hp Fiat A 20 twelve-cylinder water-cooled V-engine, mounted on the upper wing, driving a pusher propeller, and carrying a twin 0.303 in (7.7 mm) gun armament.

The first prototype was followed two years later by a second aircraft, the M.41bis. This modified version had a higher engine rating of 440 hp and had a vertical rather than oblique frontal radiator. It was ordered into production in 1930, 41 being built for the Italian Navy. These equipped the two squadrons of the 88° Autonomous Maritime Hunting Group when this was formed on May 10, 1930 at Vigna di Valle. The M.41bis remained in the first line inventory until supplanted by the Meridionali Ro.44 float fighter in 1938."
