The M.S.412 was designed before the Franco-German Armistice and was in fact a M.S.405 fitted with a Hispano-Suiza 12Y51 engine. The type was built by Dornier (Doflug), Eidgenössisches Flugzeugwerke (EFW) and SWS in Switzerland as the D-3801. Engine, armament and equipment were all Swiss-made.

The aircraft pictured was rebuilt between 1994 and 2000 and became a hybrid of D-3800 J-84 (fuselage), and D-3801’s J-143 (parts) and J-276 (wings) and temporarily marked as a M.S.406-C1 in French colors. Normally it is shown as the Swiss Air Force J-143.
