Douglas DC-3C

02/28/2011. Remarks by Jack McKillop: "This Douglas Model DC-3A-467 was ordered by the USAF as a C-47B-10-DK s/n 43-49219 and delivered on October 23, 1944 and served in the USAAF/USAF for 14 years. The superchargers were removed and it was redesignated C-47D on June 30, 1946. During that period it served in the US, Bermuda, Japan, the Philippines and Okinawa. It was sold to PAL (Philippines Airlines Inc.) on April 21, 1959, registered PI-C486 and was converted to a DC-3C.

On December 23, 1969, it was purchased by Papuan Air Transport Ltd. of Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea, registered VH-PNM and named 'Mt Murray'. The airline was taken over by Ansett Airlines of Papua New Guinea in July 1970 and renamed Ansett (P&NG) Pty. Ltd. in 1972. This DC-3C was leased to Bush Pilots Airways Ltd. of Cairns, Queensland, Australia from February 1972 to March 1974 and was purchased by Air Queensland (the former name of Bush Pilots Airways) on January 8, 1982. On November 19, 1983, it was sold to the Mackay Air Museum in Mackay, Queensland, reregistered VH-SBT and flew as 'Gooney Bird Tours' in Northern Queensland before being retired as a static exhibit.

On March 27, 1987, Warbird DC-3 Syndicate of Auckland, New Zealand purchased it and it underwent an extensive rebuild. For many years the aircraft was painted in the color scheme used by the RAF and other Allied air forces during the invasion of Normandy and Operation 'Market Garden' at Arnhem during WW II. It was olive green on upper surfaces and eggshell blue below. The aircraft has been repainted as Royal New Zealand Air Force Dakota s/n NZ3546. It is preserved and operated by NZ Warbirds at Ardmore Airport, Auckland."
