Polson Special

08/22/2022. Remarks by Johan Visschedijk: "The Polson Special was built as a racing aircraft for Earl S. Daugherty. Thor (Thomas) Polson constructed it from 1915 to 1917 in the garage at the Bixby estate Rancho Los Cerritos, some 5 mls (8 km) north of the center of Long Beach, California. Polson was the chauffeur and mechanic of the Bixby family. Daugherty won the first prize with the Polson Special in the "Sports Plane Special" race at the Aero Club of Southern California Air Meet held at the Los Angeles Speedway, July 16-17, 1921. Power plant was a 90 hp Curtiss OX-5 engine. The aircraft was withdrawn from use in 1924.

Decades later the aircraft was restored and, registered N271, it received a CofA on November 13, 2007. By January 7, 2009 it was registered to George Jenkins of Saint Davids, Pennsylvania. Presently the aircraft on display at the Eagles Mere Museum at the Merritt Field Airport near Laporte."
