Supermarine 361 Spitfire LF.Mk.IXC

08/15/2008. Remarks by Bernhard Klein: "The aircraft was built by Vickers-Armstrong at Castle Bromwich and fitted with an 1,580 hp Rolls-Royce Merlin 66 twelve-cylinder supercharged liquid-cooled V-engine. It was delivered to the RAF on October 23, 1943, and scrapped four years later, on October 13, 1947.

Flown by Squadron Leader James Edgar "Johnnie" Johnson, the aircraft is pictured carrying two barrels of beer to be delivered to the men under Johnson's command on the day after D-Day, the invasion of Normandy. Johnnie Johnson became the highest scoring Allied ace in Europe during WWII, with 38 victories. He left the RAF in the rank of Air Vice-Marshal in 1966, and died January 30, 2001 at the age of 85."
