11/30/2007. Remarks by Bernhard Klein: "The initial work on this light bomber was carried out as a company-funded project at the Northrop Corporation of El Segundo, Ca., which was at that time 51 percent owned by Douglas.

The USAAC ordered 63 A-20s (two 1,700 hp Wright R-2600-7 Cyclone radials with turbo superchargers) and 123 A-20As (two 1,600 hp Wright R-2600-11 Cyclone radials without turbo superchargers) under Contract AC12967 (s/n 39-721/39-797, 40-71/40-179) of June 30, 1939, and eventually another 20 A-20As under Contract AC15093 (s/n 40-3143/40-3162).

Plagued by engine cooling problems and troubles with the turbo supercharger system (seen on side of engine nacelle), the 206 A-20/A-20As ordered were produced as A-20, A-20A, P-70 night fighter and F-3 photographic reconnaissance aircraft.

The pictured aircraft was the sole A-20 produced, which flew for the first time in late October 1938. After completion of flight testing, the turbo superchargers were removed and re-engined by two R-2600-11s it became the XP-70 night fighter prototype. It crashed on February 5, 1943, near Kissimmee AAFB, Florida.

The 206 A-20/A20As ordered production breakdown:

     A-20A, 143 built, s/n 39-721/39-734, 40-71/40-179, 40-3143/40-3162.

     XF-3, 1 built, s/n 39-741.

     YF-3, 2 built, s/n 39-745, 39-748.
