09/15/2006. Remarks by Bernhard Klein: "An old and very rare photo showing first prototype with the Merlin engine and P-38 type air scoop. The two pieces of information I have on the unusual shaped underwing attachments are conflicting. One states they were transfer tanks, but another says they were used cartridge collectors. I think the first is more believable since the XP-81 did not have armament installed."
