De Schelde Scheldemeeuw

08/31/2019. Remarks by Johan Visschedijk: "Company constructor Theo Slot developed from the Scheldemusch the smallest Dutch seaplane, the Scheldemeeuw (meaning Schelde Gull). The idea that such an aircraft would be a success in the water-rich country was not nearly as bad. However, it is striking that seaplanes have never been popular in Dutch sport aviation, not even the Scheldemeeuw. Registered PH-ALK the prototype made its first flight from the sea channel Veerse Gat on June 19, 1936, with Slot at the controls.

Because over time it turned out that there was no buyer for the aircraft and because De Schelde wanted to gain experience with light metal constructions in connection with the planned license building of the Dornier Do 24 flying boat, the wooden boat hull of the PH-ALK was replaced by an aluminum hull in 1937. The aircraft was reregistered PH-ATM and subsequently flown. It remained the sole example of the type and it was demolished around the outbreak of WW II.
