Armstrong Whitworth A.W.52G

10/31/2011. Remarks by Johan Visschedijk: "The A.W.52G was an experimental all-wing glider which was produced to provide aerodynamic data and particularly to investigate problems of stability and control as applied to tailless aircraft. Design work began in May, 1943, and in the following March construction was initiated. An engineless design was chosen for quickness of production, and on March 2, 1945, the A.W.52G was towed into the air on its first flight.

Much valuable data was gained with the A.W.52G and a new series of flight trials began early in 1949, with a Lancaster as the tug replacing the Whitley used previously. When released from 20,000 ft (6,095 m) the glide lasted for about 30 min, allowing sufficient time for observations to be made."
