Curtiss 50C Robin C-1

10/31/2012. Remarks by Johan Visschedijk: "Douglas Cowan Fraser was a pioneering Newfoundland pilot of the 1930s, and founded Old Colony Airways in 1931. He bought the pictured Robin in 1931 and it arrived at St. John's on May 19, it was operated from Quidi Vidi Lake. However, within a year the aircraft was lost.

On November 1, while returning from Middle Arm, White Bay, Fraser ran out of fuel and landed at Wigwam Pond, some 10 mls (16 km) from Grand Falls; Fraser and his passenger walked to Grand Falls. Returning with fuel a few days later, Fraser found his floatplane frozen in the ice, and it was unable to take off. On December 7, his mechanic Bert Cleyton replaced the floats with skis, and they made an attempt to take off. Unfortunately the skis hit thin ice and the aircraft sank into the pond, Fraser and Clayton escaped injuries."
