Johan Visschedijk: "The Israel Defense Force/Air and Space Arm (IDF/ASA) leased 25 Kfir's (Lion Cub) to the USN/USMC for dissimilar air combat training, they were designated F-21A. Twelve went to the USN VF-43 at
NAS Oceana in April 1985, receiving the BuNo 163298 to 163309, although they were never applied on the aircraft. Instead, they had a non-standard serial number derived from the aircraft's three-digit IDF/ASA serial prefixed by 999, as shown below. The USN aircraft were returned to the IDF/ASA in March 1988.
The USMC VFMT-401, at Yuma, Arizona, received their thirteen aircraft in July 1987, these also receive the non-standard serials derived from the IDF/ASA serials. The USMC aircraft were returned to Israel on September 29, 1989."
