Grumman G-44A Widgeon

03/31/2013. Remarks by Johan Visschedijk: "In 1944 Grumman Aircraft Engineering Corporation turned its attention from the wartime production of naval fighters to possible civilian markets, and started to produce a new version of the twin-engined G-44 Widgeon amphibian, the G-44A.

Still a five-seater, it had a redesigned hull, with a deep keel forward, civilian trim. The two 200 hp Ranger engines were replaced by Continental W-670 or Lycoming 6-435A engines. First flight was made on August 8, 1944, and 76 were produced, the last being delivered on January 13, 1949. Another 41 were produced as the SCAN 30 by the French firm Société de Construction Aéro-Navales.

The pictured aircraft was built in 1946, reportedly first registered as N86628, and at least between 1963 and 1980 it was registered N1629H. On May 1, 1989, it was registered as N44CH, new owner was Charlie R. Hillard, Fort Worth, Texas. The aircraft had its engines swapped for two Lycoming GO-480 engines, and Hillard had it finished in British WW II markings, representing a Royal Navy Widgeon Mk.I, s/n FP469, that flew in the West Indies."
