Republic AP-23 F-84G Thunderjet

05/31/2018. Remarks by Johan Visschedijk: "This aircraft was one of many produced under the Mutual Defense Assitance Program (MDAP) and received the USAF serial 51-10894. In the French AF it served with the Escadron de chasse 3/1 Argonne (coded "1-PF") from February 1, 1953 till November 1, 1957.

51-10894 was transferred to the Turkish AF in November 1957, and it served with 192 Filo (squadron) at Balikesir AB. On August 23, 1958, Lieutenant Erol Fercan took off from Balikesir AB, but later encountered an engine failure. The aircraft crashed into the Aegean Sea near the island Balik Adasi, apparently the pilot tried to bail out, as his body was recovered wrapped in his parachute. In September 2009 a diver discovered the wreckage near Ayvalik at a depth of 52 ft (16 m) and it is now a diving site."
